STDtesting.com interviews Ivan Konstantinov, lead developer of the new HIV AIDS 3D model and winner of the 2010 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge.
STDtesting.com interviews the illustration category winner of the 2010 International Science and Engineering Visualization challenge, Ivan Konstantinov. Konstantionov, Director and Lead Developer for Visual Science Company, recently developed the most detailed and accurate 3D model of the HIV virus to date. The model, including 17 viral and cellular proteins and 160,000 lipid molecules of 8 different types, maintains the structural and proportional integrity of a true HIV particle. Derived from over 100 scientific journal and publication sources, the model took nearly three months to build.

\"We specifically elected the HIV virus, as it\'s a well studied object, allowing us to depict its different parts from envelope proteins to genome fragments,\" added Konstantinov.

The HIV virus is only one of many supramolecular structures already designed. In addition to the HIV model, Visual Science Company designed the swine flu virus (A/H1N1) and the adenovirus model.

\"My team considers such 3D models as a new way to present and promote scientific data about ubiquitous human viruses. We attempt to show viral particles as close to the real version as possible, offering the scientific community and general public - a better understanding of the complexity of these structures,\" Konstantinov commented.

\"Ongoing HIV AIDS research similar to Konstantinov\'s, not only increases understanding and knowledge, but also provides additional fuel for researchers striving to find a cure for people living with HIV AIDS,\" adds Jonathon Weatherly, President of STDtesting.com.
